Joomla 5 end of life: what changes and what to do
Is your website running Joomla 5? It works, but it has entered its last year of support. Here are the official dates and what to plan, in plain words.
The official dates
- Since 13 October 2026: Joomla 5 no longer gets bug fixes, only security fixes.
- After 12 October 2027: no fixes at all, not even for security. Any flaw found later will stay open.
- Joomla 6, the current version, is supported until 16 October 2029.

What about older versions?
- Joomla 4: no fixes since October 2025.
- Joomla 3: support ended on 17 August 2023 (paid extended support ran until February 2025).
According to W3Techs (4 November 2026), 7 out of 10 Joomla websites still run a version that no longer gets any fix. No reason to panic, but it is a door that hacking robots know well.
What to do
- Check your version. In the administrator, bottom right — or ask me for a free check (I only look at what is visible from the outside).
- Make a verified backup. A backup only exists once it has been opened again successfully.
- Check your extensions. Each one needs a version compatible with Joomla 6. This is where most problems hide.
- Move to Joomla 6 before October 2027. No rush: from Joomla 5 to 6 it is an upgrade, not a rebuild.
I can do it for you
